Core Skills: Building Image blog 4 (Frances Hansen) Monday 24th March

This is an artist that i've never heard of or I have never seen any of his works. Sean is a canadian artist whose hands are submerged in diverse, yet interrelated mediums. Working as a photographer, a illustrator, designer and art director. Sean is known for his typographic portraits. He uses the lyrics from singers and creates a whole new portrait design.

Sean says: "In my typographic portraits I hand draw the type in such a way that the words come together to form portraits. I manually distort each letter to fit the space I need it to fill. The funny thing is that I’ve studied and currently work a lot with type, but it wasn’t until I began these illustrative designs that I began to truly appreciate typography."

3 IMAGES:

Bob Marley (Reggae Singer)

Pharrell Williams (HIPHOP and RNB singer/music producer)

Beyonce Knowles (HIPHOP and RNB singer)
In response to these three images, they were the ones that stood out to me the most because not only are they popularly known in the world but they have lived a long time to show to the world the new change for music. From olden day music such as Elvis Presley and Bob Marley who are two very different artists were famous for their music, as well as now days where Pharrell Williams and Beyonce Knowles have a whole different crowd listening to their music. People say music makes the world go round. Does it really? I would say to that yea sometimes it does but not only music, in this case it can be art, or typography even.

The way these artworks are laid out is amazing and the reason why I say it stands out, is because of the words of songs that are put together to create an amusing portrait of the music artist that sings the words to the song. Not only that, its what you see in the picture, this artist combines a variety of skills and techniques in one piece. For example the Beyonce image, it consists of 3 things text (typography), self portraiture (image) and illustrative designs (own ideas and concepts). It seems simple but I am very determined to use this Sean Williams works as an example for experimenting.
