Core Lens: (Rebecca Hobbs) Tuesday 1st April 2014

My Self Portrait Project is based on the ideas of text. These two artists have inspired me to take self portraits of my family instead of myself and merge text with their portraits. The way that the first artist has used text is interesting because of the constant use of text. So to do this i will experiment with the camera skills i have learnt and take a few photographs of my family members. Because ZHang Huan relates to what my idea is for this project and the image below, i'm also bring up family tree and heritage.

Zhang Huan
Family Tree, 2000 New York, USA
"I invited 3 calligraphers to write texts on my face from early morning until night. I told them what they should write and to always keep a serious attitude when writing the texts even when my face turns to dark. My face followed the daylight till it slowly darkened. I cannot tell who I am. My identity has disappeared."

BUILDING IMAGES INDIVIDUAL PROJECT (publication cover)

JUST FOR RESEARCH

RRaW (Cassandra) MANIFESTO BASED ON EQUALITY

Our group, Elisapeta, Kristian and I came up with writing our manifesto based on gender equality.

GENDER EQUALITY
We believe that women should not be displayed as inferior or superior
We don't understand why men should get paid more wages for the same quality of work as women
We feel that women and men should work together to make a better future
Equality is having equal rights where a woman combats against discrimination driven from a man in the responsibility of maintaing these rights
Gender equality is a human issue, it affects us all
LOVE IS LOVE.

Core Skills: Building Image (Frances Hansen) Wednesday 26 March

Was researching more about typographic designs based on "MUSIC" for my indiviual projects and found a music video that involves animation and text.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEKEjpTzB0Q

This relates to my publication because it involves music and text which i will be working on. The theme for my publication will be music.

Core Skills: Building Image blog 4 (Frances Hansen) Monday 24th March

This is an artist that i've never heard of or I have never seen any of his works. Sean is a canadian artist whose hands are submerged in diverse, yet interrelated mediums. Working as a photographer, a illustrator, designer and art director. Sean is known for his typographic portraits. He uses the lyrics from singers and creates a whole new portrait design.

Sean says: "In my typographic portraits I hand draw the type in such a way that the words come together to form portraits. I manually distort each letter to fit the space I need it to fill. The funny thing is that I’ve studied and currently work a lot with type, but it wasn’t until I began these illustrative designs that I began to truly appreciate typography."

Illustrator: SEAN WILLIAMS

3 IMAGES:

Bob Marley (Reggae Singer)

Pharrell Williams (HIPHOP and RNB singer/music producer)

Beyonce Knowles (HIPHOP and RNB singer)
In response to these three images, they were the ones that stood out to me the most because not only are they popularly known in the world but they have lived a long time to show to the world the new change for music. From olden day music such as Elvis Presley and Bob Marley who are two very different artists were famous for their music, as well as now days where Pharrell Williams and Beyonce Knowles have a whole different crowd listening to their music. People say music makes the world go round. Does it really? I would say to that yea sometimes it does but not only music, in this case it can be art, or typography even.

The way these artworks are laid out is amazing and the reason why I say it stands out, is because of the words of songs that are put together to create an amusing portrait of the music artist that sings the words to the song. Not only that, its what you see in the picture, this artist combines a variety of skills and techniques in one piece. For example the Beyonce image, it consists of 3 things text (typography), self portraiture (image) and illustrative designs (own ideas and concepts). It seems simple but I am very determined to use this Sean Williams works as an example for experimenting.

RRaW Inspirational Text: Tuesday 4th March (cassandra)

"Drink two glasses of cement and harden up" is what he always says to me. My father has been the most inspirational person in my life, he is a massive influence since i could remember. He grew up following his dream of becoming an art teacher. From imagining his background i immediately thought of a Drake song, "started from the bottom" but kind of different in a way, more like started from the very very bottom. It all started in high school, he had a major passion for art "to create what the world hands to you, its important to remember who you are and where you came from" he says, it seems to me that he's been on a wild roller coaster. In high school he was awarded a scholarship to Elam University in Auckland City. Although he struggled moving here, he tried his best to keep it together. He found it hard to find a job to help support him in health and in transport so he'd make the most of what he had. My father is the most important person in my life and has influenced me to try my best to become an artist like him. Soon after in about 4 years he received his Bachelors in Fine Arts, but to become an art teacher he had to take another year. He was then offered a contract to do his teaching course at Mt Albert Grammar in 1992, where back then was a all boys school. Long story short he finally got the chance to  be a teacher. Not long after he applied for a job at Hillary college between 1993 and 1994, his application was accepted and he finally made his dream come true. From from 1994 to 2005 he worked as an art teacher. His position of becoming Head of department was given to a new colleague which made him a bit annoyed, but more good news came to his attention and he was offered another job at the same school but in a different department. He was given the choice to continue as an art teacher or work in the technology department as a graphics design teacher, he took the challenge and from 2005 till now he is still teacher at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate. So far since i've known my father he has been teaching for almost 20 years, he started way before i was born.  My father is the biggest and most inspirational role model in my life, his shadow will forever be in my reach.

RRaW critiquing excercise: Tuesday 4th March (cassandra)

Critiquing Excercise:
1st Image: John Pule 'There will be another Time'

I focused to much on the way i thought he was thinking when he was painting this artwork, because of they way everything is layed out and i was quick to judge on how this artwork relates to its title, 'There will be another time'. The colour green really brought out the meaning. Green symbolizes nature and growth. I personally think that oil painting was based on his background, on where he grew up and who he grew up with. Each cloud simply represents childhood experiences and the people who he had met as a child. This image really meant a lot to me because it kind of reminded me of the type of artist i could be. My artwork could be based on my surroundings and background even my childhood.

Core Skills: Lens Based Media ( Rebecca Hobbs)

Last weekend I had no choice to attend the Pasifika Festival held at Western Springs Lakeside Park. My family and I shared a food stall with other family members, we sold a lot of food and made a great profit out of it. Every plate was full of Niuean food made in a umu (underground oven) with drinks and desserts. This day was full on, a heap of customers lining up for our food. I don't blame them for loving our traditional food. Soon after we were all sold out, we started selling from 7am and finished at 2pm. We were proud of the outcome and hope to do it next year.

Here are a few photos that I took on my breaks:

Core Skills: Building Image (Frances Hansen) Stencilling blog

Stencilling:
Banksy is one of my long time favourites, his stencilling is known for vandalism but i think that art is art. His artwork is almost similar to graffiti art and is very fascinating because it captures the eye of people who walk the streets.
These three images are spray painted. They explain a lot of meaning the first image is a women lifting the sheet to sweep up rubbish so i guess it means that she is trying to keep people from littering. the second image is an image of a burglar, so i think is and is throwing a bouque of flowers. The last image is Banksy's name, spray painted on the side wall which shows the people who the artist is that creates these wonderful images.

Core skills: (Rebecca Hobbs) Research your project

Research your project.

IDEA: self portrait

For research:
What i would be researching for is photographers and photos that relate to similar interests as me and show examples of what i intend to share on my blog.
Such as self portraiture/portraits of myself, family, friends or self portrait photographers such Vivien Maier, Cindy Sherman or painters such Yasumasa Morimura. These photographer are very impressive because of the use of them thinking about what their taking or how their going to take it. Theres application and experimenting and i think that Yasumasa is a experimenter because of his collages between his images and Vincent Van Gogh's self portrait painting.

Sports photography was always an idea that was stuck in the back of my head. I enjoy sports photography because theres many ways you can take photos of sports players such as, full body shots, head shots or not even anything to do with the players, it could also be about tactics and strategies. Contemporary photography for example Robin Rhobes who takes a maximum of 9-10 images that relate to a storyline or similar to a film strip or outline.

RRaW: Blog statement (cassandra) thursday 6 march

What i decided to base my blog on is my interests, life events, my own artwork and photography of my artworks as well as my cultural background. Just to break it down, my interests would be much about my favourite sport or hobbies and the important people that surround me. Life events such as birthdays, concerts, family outings and anything that involves me or others that i know of. My artwork and photography that i'd like to share are anyone and most importantly with those who may be interested in the same genres that i am interested in, so many possibilities that i could be friends or following people that have similar interests. My cultural background means a lot to me because i've never been to the island my parents were born in and came from so i look forward to experiencing and gaining knowledge from my fathers design and art background.

Core Skills: Building Image steve lovett (Frances Hansen)

Steve Lovett

in this photoshop image its hard to tell that this is a mix of barack obama and hillary clinton, but you can see the similarities because of obamas features but hillarys hair colour and skin colour.

In this photoshop image you can tell it has alot to do with editing and collaging, i find it very fascinating but would be hard to create on my own because im not too confident with the software.

this photoshop image is very impressive because it doesn't look like there was any photoshop or editing done to it.
